Mod or Modernist subculture appeared in London in the late 1950's and early 1960's. It was influenced by modern Jazz, existentialism and French New Wave cinema. Mods characterized themselves by wearing their hair short or nearly sheared off, tight fitting European suits and by riding Italian mopeds.Their forced departure from mainstream society and adoption of similar tastes and styling caused both mod men and women to take on an androgynous aesthetic.
